The hyper-real personal ident was a project I worked on. A short (10 second) video that represents a personal friend's identity, interests, personality, dreams, and ambitions. This project was showcased on both Vimeo and Instagram, hence why the video changed ratio to suit the intended platforms.
This personal ident I based on a friend I've known ever since high school. 'Rebecca'. In 2013 Rebecca experienced hard times shortly after the passing of her Uncle, which led to the diagnosis of her anxiety. Facing difficulties in forming friendships and her concentration at school led to constant anxiety attacks. She then discovered anime which helped her escape from her issues and now cosplays with friends from the anime cosplay community at various anime conventions within Melbourne.
Rebecca has always had a love for Studio Ghibli and Black Butler. When watching films created by Hayao Miyazaki from Studio Ghibli, she admired the beautiful vivid scenery that would serve as backdrops, bringing a sense of serenity and tranquillity to various films like 'Howl's Moving Castle'. Rebecca cosplayed as her favourite character from the Black Butler series, a butler named Sebastian for this video. An anime series set in Victorian England, Sebastian serves as a butler and a bodyguard for his master. Sebastian is quite graceful yet contains a witty sense of humour. But whenever his master is in trouble, he is truly a deadly demon to battle. This character also has a signature fighting style – throwing multiple cutlery knives at the enemy all at once. I wanted to incorporate this into the video to portray Rebecca as a 'fighter', considering what she has dealt with in the past. However, underneath that facade, she contains a graceful, gentle and kind personality, as represented by the vivid luscious green 'Studio Ghibli' inspired environment. Within the video composition, I used the Double Exposure method to demonstrate the character's fighting stances behind the still image of Rebecca cosplaying as Sebastian. After the double exposure fades and enters into a parallax style, with knives coming towards the camera to end the video. The soundtrack for the composition is Zinaida Trokai's 'The Spirit of Russian Love'. Music by: Zinaida Trok
